Making New Music with Shakuhachi

Working on new music with shakuhachi and other instruments the past week with author choreographer Muna Tseng at the Baryshnikov Arts Center here in New York City. What an amazing experience creating art from personal history. Muna is telling the story of her paternal grandfather. I’m reminded of how empowering it is to tell you own story. You alone are responsible for the upholding the history, legacy and beauty of the your family’s history. What better way to do this than with art. Do not trust anyone else to get it right!. We had our first showing from the three week residency last night. I met Mikhail Baryshnikov himself afterwards at the social. I thanked hime for allowing us to create in his beautiful and inspiring space. He said, “This is your home.”

I remember seeing a video tape of Baryshnikov performing for the first time around 1985. I think it was his famous Le Corsaire solo. It made me want to dance.
Thanks you Mikhail!

Zen saying for Perry.
