Lunch Break Shakuhachi

Life in NYC is never boring. It’s very much like a great Honkyoku - quite and subdued on the surface, but bursting at the seams internally.
I just went from a few intense weeks of creating and performing theater to sitting in a jury waiting room for selection. The first group was selected but the remaining good citizens were sent to lunch.
On my break I played a PVC shakuhachi.

This may sound a bit silly but I had been making and rehearsing with PVC so much in the past month that I sort of got hooked on playing them. It’s not that I haven’t been playing other shakuhachi flutes, I have been. I recently partook in Ralph’s Sankyoku workshop and played my bamboo1.8 a lot so maybe it has to do with the total life immersion required of theater that made the PVC flute so endearing recently.
So, after lunch I found a place to sit on along the crowded strip in front of the courthouse to play the flute. There were lot’s of lawyers, jurors and people on trial walking about, not many noticing the sound of the PVC (I didn’t take anything personally : ) But, then I noticed a blind Asian man walking my way. He came directly towards me, or the sound, and held out a hand full of coins that seemed to be searching for a bowl. He seemed a bit surprised when he heard my American accented “Thank you” as I accepted the coins. Perhaps the sound of my voice didn’t match the sound of my flute ![]()
