Weddings and Shakuhachi

Perry Yung Shakuhachi Image

I played at the wedding of my dear friends this weekend in Newbury, New Hampshire. I have played shakuhachi for many weddings and often find myself playing Minyo inspired music rather than honkyoku. But this weekend I played Choshi during the ceremony because the officiator and Bride are both Buddhists, among other things. We discussed some options during rehearsal and when I offered a sample of Choshi they said,“Play that one!”.

The entire ceremony was just lovely. Sasa was a flower girl and Jet was the ring bearer. It was difficult playing with the sun in my eyes but I think I managed to not get too upstaged by the kids smile

If you’re ever in the area, the Fells is a great place to visit. It’s registered as a historical house and there is a Zen garden. There’s also Sunapee Lake, a great vacation play ground where we stayed for two days.

It was a fun filled weekend, now back to the work bench.
