We spent the Fourth in Bristol, RI. I was told it has the country’s longest running and oldest July 4th parade. What an amazing experience that was. Happy birthday America! See Uncle Sam on the rest of the blog.

Perry Yung Shakuhachi Image

Hi All, I’m holed up in Barrington, Rhode Island for the month of July. The kids need some green for the summer. What better place than Grandma and Grandpa’s. I have a work bench set up and can undertake all aspects of shakuhachi repair and will continue to take commissions while I’m here.
If you plan on sending an instrument for repair, please contact me first to let me know a flute is on it’s way. Then send it here:

Asclpeius, The First Week.

Asclepius just finished it’s first of a three week run. We’ve been in the theater for about thirteen days (and nights) straight with tech rehearsals and the performances. Today is out first day off. Even though we were tired, last night’s show the tightest yet. The chorus and music is really coming together. Those in the business know that even though you rehearse your butt off, the magic doesn’t happens until it’s performed in front of a live audience. Here’s an excerpt from a review...“with totems of experimental theatre, including puppets and masks, a winging pageant unfurls…Go to Asclepius to see swirling colorful patterns of dance, movement, and acrobatics.  Then look up at the sky:  In punishment for raising the dead, the god of medicine was killed, but finally taken into the heavens as a constellation. At 91 years of age, and for all she has weathered and done for and in the downtown theatre scene, Ellen Stewart should be given a constellation herself.  - Bob Schulman.

Ivan Plays Shakuhachi in the NYC Subway

I was playing one of my Chikusing 1.8s on a subway platform as I was on my way downtown to an Asclepius rehearsal. The subway is one of my favorite acoustic spaces in the City so I thought I would take advantage by sneaking in some great practice time while waiting for the train.

Craig Arnold JUSF Artist Fellow Missing in Japan

Craig’s work as a poet brought him much acclaim. Here is the recent wikipedia info:

As of April 30, 2009, Craig Arnold went missing on the small volcanic island of Kuchinoerabujima, Japan.[5] He went for a solo hike to explore an active volcano on the island and never returned to the inn where he was staying. While Japanese law mandates government-backed searches for three days, on April 30, 2009, the Japanese government agreed to extend the search an additional three days.[6] Arnold was not found, and the search was then picked up by the international NGO 1st Special Response Group.[7] Craig Arnold’s trail was found near a high cliff, and he was presumed to have died from a fatal fall near the date of his disappearance.[8]
More current information can be found here along with a donation link to support further efforts to find and bring Craig back to the USA:
