Being a Shakuhachi Maker

Perry Yung Shakuhachi Image
Shakuhachi repairs this week.

Hello everyone, I’ve been think a lot lately on what it means to be a shakuhachi maker. I restore flutes for professional players, teachers, collectors and plain folks world wide and while everyone in this diverse community have individual needs my first obligation is to the culture of Japan. What I do with my hands is guided by what my teachers have taught me, respect. Japanese culture is about aesthetic refinement. Whether it is architecture, food, clothing or shakuhachi, everything Japanese is presented in full awareness of the art of craft. When I restore flutes such as the ones shown above, I have an obligation to the original craftsman who works in a culture that expects the best from his/her hands. The bamboo, the urushi lacquer, the horn or ivory inlay, the rattan… everything comes into play in the hands of the master to create these timeless works of art. It is my job to pay homage to this culture that has enriched my life beyond description.
A deep bow to my patrons for allowing me to grow as a shakuhachi maker.

Shakuhachi Offering for NYPD Officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos

Hello All, I’d like to give a shout out to Shawn Edwards who won the 2.4 EARTH Model flute played in my Offering video to the fallen NYPD officers. We brought in money to help pay for the officers’ mortgages through tunnels2towers.org. I hope to do more of this in 2015. The great thing about the shakuhachi provides me aside from music, spirituality and health is community. I have some amazing friends out there!

May you all experience a rich and healthy 2015!
A deep bow, Perry

When Re-tuning a Shakuhachi is neccessary

This great looking flute did not work well, especially at the level for study or performance of Japanese shakuhachi music. When blown at a soft beginner’s breath there was a nice sound, but once blown hard the Re and Ro notes broke into strange harmonics instead of the second octave notes. This indicates a poorly shaped bore profile.  A few adjustments with my Spot Tuning Method at select resonance areas fixed the issues. It’s now a very playable shakuhachi an experienced musician can performance with. Feel free to ask any questions if you have a questionable flute wink

Arashiyama Kyoto Bamboo Forest

Perry Yung Shakuhachi Image

We’ve been in Japan now for nearly three weeks and as always, it’s difficult to put into words everything that has transpired and transformed in this short space. Even time itself is questioned when one stands in a magnificent forest such at the one picture here, the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest of Kyoto. I played shakuhachi while walking this very path over ten years ago. This time I was with my children, whose company I had not the pleasure of back then.

I’m in Japan until Aug 27, 2014

Perry Yung Shakuhachi Image
Hi All, It’s always a bit busy around here and there’s always so much to report. Keeping up a blog is time intensive and the shop work has precedence over my office hours. However, I do have some big news to share - I am honored to announce that I have received an Asian Cultural Council Award to further my shakuhachi research in Japan. This grant allows me to meet with renown players, craftsmen and collectors of the best playing historical instruments in the world. Since the Japan United States Friendship Commission Grant I received in 2002, it has been my dream to further my research and deepen my understanding of this unique instrument and it’s culture. I am honored, humbled and blessed. A big thank you to the Asian Cultural Council!
